What Is Your North Star?
A lot has been said and blogged about the North Star.
Metaphorically, your NorthStar is like your mission statement. The library for the values you live by. Life changes and thus our circumstances change many times over and yet, we remain guided by our North Star.
It is paramount then that we know what we want in life, otherwise we would keep going back to what we know and what feels comfortable. Like an elastic band that snaps back to what is comfortable. Maybe, we need to stretch that band harder until it doesn’t fit the same way anymore. We also need to define the values that are important to us. What kind of relationship culture do we want each time we enter a relationship dynamic. What kind of energy do we want to engage in? What kind of information do we expose ourselves to?
Our North Star then is how we envision our lives and the vision for the relationships we are driving towards and what matters most to us. Without a North Star, we could be at the mercy of our emotions, and we can be dragged back to what feels good at the moment and fear drives us away from what feels bad. In the moment of that feeling, when fear and hurt do not seem to dissipate, what can help us is our North Star. Somehow it widens our lens.
